How Antique and Temple Gold Is Valued by Buyers in Chennai

Antique and temple gold jewellery often has exceptional metal quality, but selling it requires finding the right buyer — one who uses XRF testing rather than assumptions about old gold. This guide explains how buyers value antique pieces and when it makes more sense to approach a specialist.

Typical Purity Ranges in Antique Jewellery

South Indian antique jewellery — particularly pieces from the colonial and pre-independence era — was frequently crafted to high purity standards. Much of this work was done in 22-karat (916) gold or higher, sometimes reaching 950–970 fineness, as the traditional goldsmithing culture prioritised metal quality and the alloys used for hardening were kept to a minimum.

Mughal-era jewellery from North India may test at a broader range, as the alloys and techniques varied significantly across regions and periods. For temple jewellery specifically commissioned by South Indian temples, the expectation was always the highest available purity, making these pieces exceptionally high-quality metalwork regardless of their age.

Does Design or Age Command a Premium from Gold Buyers?

Dedicated gold buyers — those who purchase gold to refine and resell as bullion — pay for the metal, not the artistry. A Victorian-era South Indian waist chain of exceptional craftsmanship will receive the same melt-value offer as a simple modern bangle of the same weight and purity. For these buyers, the design and provenance of the piece are irrelevant.

However, this is not the only market available to antique gold sellers. Antique jewellery dealers, auction houses, and specialist collectors may pay above melt value for pieces with significant historical, artistic, or cultural importance. If you believe a piece may have value beyond its gold content, getting a specialist valuation before selling to a gold buyer is strongly recommended.

XRF as the key tool: Old and antique gold pieces often surprise sellers with their purity results. Do not assume antique means lower quality. Insist on XRF testing for every antique piece, and watch the screen — some pieces will test at 950+ fineness, earning you significantly more than a 916 offer would provide.

When to Sell to a Collector vs a Gold Buyer

Consider an antique or specialist dealer when your piece has one or more of these characteristics: it pre-dates 1900; it carries inscriptions, royal provenance, or religious significance; the craftsmanship is exceptional — filigree, Kundan setting, repoussé work — and well-preserved; or it is part of a documented collection. In these cases, the specialist market may pay 20–100% above the melt value.

A gold buyer is the right choice when the piece is antique in terms of age but not particularly distinctive in design or provenance; when the gold purity testing confirms a high fineness that the melt value alone justifies selling at; or when you need liquidity quickly and cannot wait for the longer timelines of auction or specialist sales. Understanding which category your piece falls into begins with an honest assessment of its historical and artistic significance.
